Greenland Dock Olympic Marina
(Planning Application number 11-AP-3157)
and
Proposed future commercial development for Greenland Dock
This website has been set up to represent public concerns about the proposals for a Greenland Dock Olympic marina with 350 new moorings (for the duration of the 2012 Olympics) and the proposed commercial development of Greenland Dock.
Given the lack of what we would consider a proper public consultation and residents’ serious concerns about information provided by the organizers of the proposed marina, this website has been set up by local residents to inform and generate discussion amongst local people. Pollution, disruption during installation, noise created by on-deck parties and barbecues, vehicles in limited residential parking areas, loss of amenities for local people and failure to remove the installation are a few of our major concerns.
Greenland Dock, first built under the name Great Howland Wet Dock in the late 1600s, is currently under threat from a temporary planning applications and future development proposal. As well as being a Public Open Space, it is categorized as a listed building and is an important and much-appreciated local amenity. It is essential to the Tideway Sailability charity, which uses the dock to support disabled people and teach them new skills.
Many local residents are concerned that the temporary marina application represents a testing of the waters by Southwark Council to see how we respond to the use of our open space as a storage facility for vessels of all types. To see more about the potential for a permanent facility see our After 2012 page.
Southwark Council has circulated a temporary planning application, number 11-AP-3157, for temporary pontoons for mooring 350 sailing and motor boats, and the supporting floating facilities, to be installed for the duration of the 2012 Olympics. This is of imminent concern, as the deadline for responses to the temporary application is the 19th October 2012. For more information about the temporary application, please see our Greenland 2012 page.
